Fijian Language Week 2020

October 4th - 10th, 2020

UK Fijian Language Week 2020 was spearheaded by Marama Alliance UK with the help from our friends in Aotearoa, the Ministry for Pacific Peoples (MPP) - and supported by the Fijian High Commission in the UK.

The week commenced with a short lotu on the MAUK Facebook page, followed by various live sessions such as an intergenerational dialogue on language and a talanoa with Dr Katringa Igglesden about masi.

We also held a Fijian serekali (poetry) competition that was open to all children aged 7-17 years old. The competition was won by the Tatawaqa siblings, John (aged 11) and Sylvia (aged 9).

The week was extremely successful in the sense that we were able to encourage conversations within the community about the importance of speaking, teaching and learning our language.
